Description

This standard defines standard test methods for evaluating the fire resistance of building materials and assemblies, measuring their ability to maintain structural integrity and contain fire, heat, and hot gases (in walls, columns, floors) for specific durations.

The test involves exposing samples to a controlled, high-temperature fire.

This standard is used to measure and describe the response of materials, products, or assemblies to heat and flame under controlled conditions, but does not by itself incorporate all factors required for fire hazard or fire risk assessment of the materials, products or assemblies under actual fire conditions.

Scope

Fire Exposure: Specimens are subjected to a controlled, high-temperature environment (a "standard fire") that mimics building fire conditions.

Performance Metrics:

  • Loadbearing Ability: Ability to bear structural loads during fire exposure.
  • Heat Transmission: Resistance to excessive heat transfer to the unexposed side.
  • Flame/Hot Gas Passage: Prevention of hot gases and flames from penetrating the assembly.
  • Hose Stream Test: A required follow-up to test the integrity of the assembly after fire exposure.

Test Components: Primarily focuses on structural elements and assemblies, such as masonry units and composite structural materials.

Limitations:

  • Does not measure smoke generation, toxicity, or flame spread over the surface.
  • Does not evaluate joints or gaps between construction elements.
  • Results cannot be directly applied to assemblies with different materials or lengths than those tested.

Equivalency: ASTM E119 is similar to the UL 263 standard for fire-resistance testing.
