Description
This Standard sets out the requirements for the fusion welding of aluminium structures and equipment by inert-gas arc welding processes.
The Standard provides for three categories of butt welds and one category of fillet weld. Tables of aluminium alloys suitable for welding, details of welded connections, methods of qualification of procedures and personnel, workmanship, weld quality and inspection requirements are included.
Appendices are also included as a checklist of matters for discussion and guidance on the selection and extent of non-destructive examination.
Scope
This Standard is intended principally for use in conjunction with AS 1664. Additionally the Standard may be used for all welded aluminium constructions, other than those constructed in accordance with AS 1200. The Standard applies to the following manual, semi-automatic, and automatic methods of welding:
- (a) Gas tungsten-arc (GTA).
- (b) Gas metal-arc (GMA).
- (c) Pulsed-arc (GTA or GMA).
- (d) Plasma-arc.
The Standard is not intended to apply to the resistance welding, brazing or soldering of aluminium. NOTE: A checklist of matters for discussion between the principal and fabricator is given in Appendix E.
