Description

The amended Acceptable Solution G12/AS1 limits the maximum lead content in any product that contains copper alloys, intended for use in contact with potable water for human consumption. This includes products such as pipe fittings, valves, taps, mixers, water heaters, and water meters. This amendment also clarifies that copper alloy water supply system components complying with this Acceptable Solution must be dezincification resistant.

Changes to transition period end dates

When these changes were consulted on and announced in 2022, the lead in plumbing product transition period end date of 1 September 2025 aligned with the introduction of equivalent plumbing product changes in Australia. In April 2023, Australia extended their transition period end date by eight months, to 1 May 2026.

In April 2024, MBIE consulted on a proposed extension to the transition period end dates for both the lead and dezincification plumbing product provisions in New Zealand.

Due to the positive response to the proposed changes, MBIE has decided to proceed with extending these transition period end dates through to 1 May 2026.

This date strikes a balance between addressing the concerns raised by the sector, alignment with Australia’s changes, and expectations arising from previous decisions from MBIE.

The amendments to Acceptable Solution G12/AS1 will be published in November 2024, and will include the extended transition period end dates, a definition of ‘lead free’ and minor editorial changes.
