Description

This specification covers requirements for electroplated cadmium coatings on steel articles that are required to withstand corrosion. Three types of coating (Notes 1 and 2) are covered: namely, Type NS, Type OS, and Type TS.

NOTE 1: Explanation of Symbols—The initial letters N, O, and T were adopted as arbitrary designations of grades of electroplating. The second letter S refers to steel as the basis metal.

NOTE 2: Classification—The conditions of exposure and use of electroplated steel are so varied that it is not possible to predict the average life of articles electroplated in accordance with Type NS, Type OS, or Type TS, or to predetermine just which type of electroplating should be specified for a given article. Such a selection must be based upon the experience of the manufacturers and users.

It is recognized that uses exist for which thicker coatings than those of Type NS will be required.

For articles that are intended for a short period of use, no standard specification for electroplating is recommended. It is suggested, however, that subject to the prevailing manufacturing conditions, certain minimum requirements should be specified in the contract or purchase order to ensure that the electroplated coatings render a useful service.

NOTE 3: Caution—Cadmium is toxic and should not be used as a coating for articles used as food or beverage containers, cooking utensils, or articles that may come in contact with food or beverages.

Because of the toxicity of cadmium vapors and cadmium oxide fumes, cadmium-electroplated articles must not be welded, spot welded, soldered, or otherwise strongly heated without adequate ventilation that will efficiently remove all toxic fumes.
