Light gauge profiled steel claddings can act effectively as structural diaphragms and in so doing can enhance a building's performance. This review forms the first part of a research programme aimed at establishing the appropriate guidelines and to provide basic data for using such diaphragm action in New Zealand. The aspects covered include the modes and conditions of diaphragm action, New Zealand and overseas practices as well as developments in design overseas.
