Description
BRANZ conducted field trials in Rotorua to examine how different metals corrode in geothermal environments. Identical samples were also exposed to a marine environment for comparison.
Copper and mild steel suffered serious corrosion in the Rotorua exposure sites, and zinc did too where concentrations of sulphur-containing gases were high.
Aluminium and stainless steel corroded more slowly in a geothermal environment than a marine environment.
