Description

This Standard covers the quantitative determination by sieve analysis of the particle size distribution in a soil, down to the 75 mm sieve. By using this Method the combined silt and clay fraction can be obtained by difference.

For particle sizes smaller than 75 mm the sedimentation method described in AS 1289.3.6.3, using a hydrometer to secure the necessary data, applies. When insufficient material is available for separate samples for this Method to be used in conjunction with the method in AS 1289.3.6.3, or when material in the intermediate sieve range can be cleaned of adhering fines before or during dry sieving to an extent that unacceptable errors in the quantity of material passing the 75 mm sieve will not be introduced, then the methods described in AS 1289.3.6.2 and AS 1289.3.6.3 apply.
